Your Journey, Step by Step
- 01—Start With a Virtual Consultation
Your journey can begin from home.
Meet with Dr. Chao virtually to discuss your goals, concerns, medical history, previous procedures, and the changes you’re considering.
When appropriate, photographs or medical records may be requested to help Dr. Chao better understand your needs before making recommendations.
You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions about the procedure, recovery, travel requirements, and what to expect next.
- 02—Develop Your Surgical Plan
If you and Dr. Chao decide to move forward, our team will guide you through the next steps.
Depending on your procedure and health history, this may include medical clearance, laboratory testing, imaging, medication instructions, preoperative forms, and other requirements.
You’ll receive individualized instructions from your surgical team.
- 03—Plan Your Trip
Once your surgery date is established, you can begin arranging your travel and accommodations.
Our team will let you know when you should arrive in San Diego, how long you should plan to remain locally, and any specific requirements related to your procedure.
- 04—Arrive in San Diego
Welcome to California.
Give yourself time to settle in, become familiar with your accommodations, purchase any last-minute necessities, and attend required preoperative appointments.
- 05—Surgery Day
Your surgical team will provide detailed instructions regarding arrival, medications, eating and drinking restrictions, transportation, and postoperative care.
A responsible adult may be required to accompany you following surgery and remain available during your initial recovery. Your team will explain the requirements specific to your procedure.
- 06—Recover in San Diego
Your first days after surgery are about one thing: recovery.
You’ll remain nearby for the period recommended by Dr. Chao and attend any required postoperative visits before being cleared for travel.
- 07—Return Home
Your return date depends on your procedure, recovery, and Dr. Chao’s recommendations.
Before leaving San Diego, you’ll receive instructions for continued recovery at home, activity restrictions, wound or incision care when applicable, and future follow-up.
- 08—Continue Your Follow-Up
Your relationship with VedaNu continues after you return home.
Your postoperative plan may include virtual follow-ups as well as future in-person visits when appropriate.
With beautiful weather, coastal neighborhoods, world-class dining, and plenty of places to unwind, San Diego is a wonderful place to spend time while you’re away from home.

Whenever possible, coordinate postoperative prescriptions before your procedure rather than waiting until after surgery.
Ask your VedaNu care team where your prescriptions should be sent and when they should be picked up.
If you’re traveling, confirm:
—Your preferred pharmacy can fill the prescribed medication
—The pharmacy will be open when you arrive
—Any medication you normally take is packed in its original container
—You have enough of your regular prescriptions for the entire trip
Need a nearby pharmacy?
Our team can help you identify convenient pharmacy options based on where you’re staying.

MEDICAL / RECOVERY
Only bring medical supplies specifically recommended by your care team.
There isn’t one universal travel timeline after plastic surgery.
How long you’ll need to remain in San Diego depends on:
- Your procedure
- Whether multiple procedures are performed
- Your medical history
- How your initial recovery progresses
- Your postoperative appointments
- Dr. Chao’s assessment
Your team will provide an anticipated local stay before surgery so you can plan accordingly.
Do not assume that feeling well enough to travel means you are medically ready to travel. Always follow Dr. Chao’s postoperative instructions.

Out-of-Town Patient
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have my initial consultation virtually?
Yes. Many out-of-town patients can begin with a virtual consultation with Dr. Chao to discuss their goals and determine appropriate next steps.
How far in advance should I plan my surgery?
We recommend allowing enough time to complete your consultation, preoperative requirements, medical clearance when necessary, and travel arrangements without feeling rushed. Timing varies by procedure and surgical availability.
How long do I need to stay in San Diego?
Your recommended stay depends on your procedure and recovery. Your care team will discuss an anticipated timeline before you finalize travel arrangements.
When should I arrive?
Your arrival date will depend on your procedure and required preoperative appointments. Our team will provide specific instructions.
Can I fly after plastic surgery?
Eventually, yes, but the appropriate timing depends on your procedure and recovery. Do not schedule your return flight based solely on a generic online recommendation. Dr. Chao will provide individualized travel guidance.
Can I go to the beach after surgery?
Not automatically. Swimming, sun exposure, strenuous walking, and other activities may be restricted during recovery. Follow your procedure-specific postoperative instructions.
What if my flight is delayed or canceled?
Contact our team as soon as possible if travel disruptions may affect a required preoperative appointment or your surgery schedule.
Do I need someone to travel with me?
Many procedures require a responsible adult to accompany you after surgery and assist during early recovery. Requirements vary by procedure.
Can I stay in an Airbnb or vacation rental?
Possibly, provided the accommodation is appropriate for your recovery and meets any requirements given by your surgical team. Consider accessibility, stairs, sleeping arrangements, bathroom access, cleanliness, and proximity to care.
Will VedaNu book my hotel or flights?
Our team can provide helpful local information and recommendations, but travel reservations remain the patient’s responsibility unless you have specifically arranged otherwise with our team.
Can you recommend hotels?
Yes. We’ve included several options on this page, and our team can help you identify areas that may work well based on your expected length of stay.
What happens if I need something while recovering?
You’ll receive instructions for contacting your surgical team and guidance about which symptoms require routine communication versus urgent or emergency medical attention.
What happens after I return home?
Your postoperative plan may include virtual follow-up and future in-person appointments. Dr. Chao will determine the appropriate schedule based on your procedure and recovery.
Should I plan a vacation around my surgery?
If you want to experience San Diego, do it before surgery or allow additional time after you’ve been medically cleared. Surgery recovery should not be treated like a vacation, and activity restrictions may significantly limit sightseeing afterward.
