Labiaplasty in San Diego
Labiaplasty is a carefully performed procedure designed to reduce and reshape the labia for improved physical ease and a greater sense of personal well-being.
Childbirth, aging, and natural anatomy can all lead to enlarged or asymmetrical labia, which may cause irritation, discomfort during physical activity, self-consciousness, or intimacy concerns. At VedaNu Wellness, we offer this intimate procedure in a safe, discreet, and supportive environment where your comfort is our priority.
Known as labial reduction or vulvar surgery, labiaplasty removes excess tissue from the labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips), helping to restore both function and appearance. Our skilled surgical team will work with you to understand your goals and customize your treatment for natural-looking, confidence-boosting results.
What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and reduces excess tissue from the labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips) to relieve physical discomfort, improve symmetry, and restore confidence. The labia are folds of skin that protect the vaginal and urinary openings, and it is completely normal for them to vary in size and shape.
Even so, some patients experience physical or emotional discomfort due to excess tissue. Common symptoms include rubbing or irritation with tight clothing, pain during intimacy, hygiene difficulties, or visible bulging in certain garments.
Labiaplasty is a customized procedure that addresses these concerns by reshaping and reducing the labial tissue with careful attention to preserving tissue integrity. It’s not about meeting a “standard” appearance. It’s about what feels right and comfortable for you.
What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?
The primary benefits of labiaplasty include reduced irritation during physical activity, improved comfort during intimacy, greater freedom in clothing choices, and a more balanced labial appearance.
Excess labial tissue can cause friction during everyday activities such as sitting, cycling, exercise, or intimacy, and may irritate the skin under tight clothing or swimwear. Beyond physical relief, the procedure offers emotional and aesthetic benefits that can that can meaningfully improve daily comfort and quality of life.
At our plastic surgery clinic, patients who undergo labiaplasty often report:
- Greater physical comfort and reduced irritation during movement
- Boosted self-confidence, especially in intimate settings
- Improved sensitivity and sexual wellness
- Freedom to wear tight-fitting clothing, lingerie, or swimwear without concern
- A more balanced, youthful labial appearance
Who Is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
- Healthy individuals over the age of 18
- Those with enlarged or uneven labia that cause discomfort or irritation
- Patients experiencing pain during intimacy, exercise, or long periods of sitting
- Individuals looking to improve intimate aesthetics and confidence
- Patients who feel self-conscious about labial appearance
- Patients without active vaginal or bladder infections at the time of surgery
How Is Labiaplasty Performed at VedaNu Wellness?
Labiaplasty is typically a quick, outpatient procedure that lasts about an hour. You’ll be comfortably sedated with either general anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on your needs and preferences.
There are two main techniques Dr. James Chao may use. Both reduce excess labial tissue and preserve natural function and sensitivity.
Trim Labiaplasty
This approach removes excess tissue along the outer edge of the labia minora. It’s ideal for patients with protruding or uneven labial edges and can help create a more balanced, symmetrical appearance.
The trim technique appeals to patients concerned about darker pigmentation along the edges of the labia, as it removes the darker pigmentation along the labial edge and creates a smoother, more uniform appearance.
Wedge Labiaplasty
This method removes a small, V-shaped wedge of tissue within the inner portion of the labia minora. The incision is carefully placed and hidden within the natural folds, preserving the outer edge.
The technique maintains the natural contour, color, and texture of the labia while reducing size and discomfort. Patients seeking a subtle internal refinement often prefer this option.
How Should I Prepare for Labiaplasty Surgery?
Once your procedure is scheduled, you’ll receive a customized set of pre-operative instructions to support a safe and smooth experience. Keep a few key guidelines in mind:
- Stop smoking several weeks before and after surgery to promote proper healing
- Pause any blood-thinning medications temporarily, under the guidance of your physician
- Arrange for transportation, as you’ll need someone to drive you home after surgery
- Plan for at least one week off work or strenuous activity to allow adequate recovery
- Follow all fasting and medication guidelines provided by your surgeon prior to your procedure
At VedaNu Wellness, we take time to walk you through each step of the process, so you feel fully prepared and informed before your procedure.
What Is Labiaplasty Recovery Like?
You’ll return home the same day as your outpatient procedure. We recommend resting for the first 2 to 3 days with your hips raised on a soft pillow to reduce swelling. Applying a padded ice pack to the area, never placing ice directly on the skin, can help minimize bruising and discomfort.
You’ll be prescribed pain medication to ease any soreness in the first few days. As anesthesia wears off, you may feel tired, so plan to rest and avoid driving or making important decisions when taking medication. Your body needs time and care to heal properly.
Post-Op Hygiene Guidelines
Cleanliness is key to a smooth recovery. Use unscented baby wipes to gently pat the area clean after using the restroom, and never wipe. You may begin showering on day three post-op. Don’t worry if the water turns slightly red at first. This is usually just dried blood released as incisions heal.
Keep the area clean and dry at all times. Avoid applying creams or scar ointments unless directed by Dr. Chao, as these may cause irritation. You’ll receive antibiotics to prevent infection, and most patients receive a prescription for Diflucan to prevent yeast infections during the healing process.
What to Expect as You Heal
Some swelling, itching, and discoloration are normal for the first few weeks. The area may appear uneven or bumpy as it heals. This is temporary. We recommend avoiding pools, hot tubs, ocean water, tampons, strenuous activity, and sexual intercourse for six weeks following surgery.
Total healing typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. Throughout this time, our team will schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and confirm everything is healing as expected. Our team is available to address any questions or concerns throughout your recovery.
Is There a Non-Surgical Alternative to Labiaplasty?
Alongside surgery, VedaNu Wellness offers a non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation option using Ultra Femme 360. This non-invasive, pain-free treatment uses radiofrequency energy to tighten vaginal tissue, improve sensitivity, and reduce the appearance of enlarged labia, with minimal discomfort and little to no downtime. Ask about combining Ultra Femme 360 with your surgical procedure to build on your results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Labiaplasty
How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?
Cost varies by technique, type of anesthesia, and the extent of correction needed. Most cases are considered cosmetic. Patients with functional symptoms may choose to submit documentation to their insurer independently for potential reimbursement. You’ll receive an individualized quote and explore financing options at your consultation.
Does Labiaplasty Hurt?
You’re comfortably sedated during surgery and feel nothing. Soreness and swelling in the first few days are managed with prescribed pain medication, and most patients describe the discomfort as mild and short-lived.
When Can I Have Sexual Intimacy After Labiaplasty?
Most patients are cleared for sexual activity at the six-week mark, once your surgeon confirms that healing has progressed appropriately.
Will Labiaplasty Affect Sensation?
Both the trim and wedge techniques are planned to preserve nerve function. Temporary changes in sensitivity can occur as you heal and usually fade as recovery progresses.
How Long Do Labiaplasty Results Last?
The tissue removed during surgery does not grow back, so results are long-lasting. Natural aging and future childbirth can affect the area over time, and your surgeon will discuss what to expect based on your plans.
Does Labiaplasty Leave Visible Scars?
Incisions can be placed along the labial edge or within natural folds, depending on the technique. They fade significantly over time and are rarely noticeable once healing completes. Post-op scar treatment and scar revision are available at VedaNu Wellness and can be a part of your recovery process.
What Procedures Can Be Combined with Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty can be combined with other procedures to address your unique goals while minimizing overall recovery time. You can explore related options on our Body Procedures page, or learn about Vaginoplasty and the Mommy Makeover, which often includes labial refinement.
