Inverted Nipple Repair

Inverted nipples can be a source of self-consciousness or functional challenges, especially for women who plan to breastfeed. This procedure involves reshaping the nipple and areola so that the nipple projects outward in a natural, balanced way — restoring appearance and, in many cases, sensitivity and function.

The surgical technique used will depend on the degree of inversion and whether the milk ducts need to be preserved. Our surgeons prioritize results that maintain the ability to breastfeed whenever possible. Most patients experience little downtime, and complications are rare. However, as with any surgery, temporary changes in sensation or mild asymmetry may occur.

Areola Reduction

Areola reduction is performed by removing a precise amount of pigmented tissue from the outer edge or base of the areola. This improves symmetry, reduces puffiness, and enhances nipple proportion. Recovery after nipple and areola correction surgery is typically quick and well-tolerated. Most patients experience mild discomfort and swelling for the first few days, which can be managed easily with prescribed medications. We recommend arranging for someone to drive you home and assist you during the first 24–48 hours.

You may notice bruising and tenderness around the treatment site. Light walking is encouraged the day of surgery to promote circulation and healing. Many patients return to work within a day or two, depending on the extent of the procedure. Any external sutures, if placed, are generally removed 1 to 2 weeks after surgery—or may dissolve on their own, depending on the method used.

Sexual activity should be avoided for about 1–2 weeks, and strenuous exercise or lifting should be postponed for approximately 3 weeks. Most patients are back to all normal activities within a month.

To ensure optimal healing, we advise avoiding sun exposure to the surgical area for at least 6 months. Sunlight can darken healing scars permanently. If exposure is unavoidable, please use a strong sunblock and keep the area protected.
