Breast reduction surgery is designed to improve both the appearance and physical symptoms caused by overly large breasts. This procedure reduces the size and reshapes the breasts to achieve better proportions while relieving pain and discomfort in the shoulders, back, and neck.
Women with disproportionately large breasts often struggle with posture issues, skin irritation, and difficulty finding clothing that fits properly. The physical weight of large breasts can cause grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, rashes under the breast fold, and chronic back strain. Breast reduction offers life-changing relief from these symptoms.
This procedure is also appropriate for younger patients experiencing juvenile breast hypertrophy. Modern surgical techniques, such as limited-incision methods and liposculpture, allow for beautiful reshaping with reduced scarring and more refined results.
Women who choose breast reduction surgery (also called reduction mammoplasty) often describe the experience as life-changing. Not only is their physical comfort improved—relieving chronic pain in the neck, shoulders, and back—but their posture, appearance, and self-confidence are also enhanced. Many patients report feeling more energetic, lighter, and finally able to enjoy a wider range of clothing options.
At VedaNu Wellness, our experienced surgeons tailor each procedure to the unique needs of the patient, combining artistic precision with medical expertise. In many cases, breast reduction is performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as breast lift, nipple/areola resizing, or correction of asymmetry for beautifully balanced results.
Breast reduction may be partially covered by health insurance depending on the severity of symptoms and documentation provided. Your surgery can be performed either at our outpatient facility or in the hospital, based on your overall medical condition. For some patients, an overnight stay may be recommended.
It’s important to note that while breast reduction significantly improves aesthetics and comfort, some women may be unable to breastfeed afterward depending on the surgical approach and anatomy. Your surgeon will walk you through every step of the process to help you make an informed decision with confidence.
Breast reduction surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and takes approximately 3 to 5 hours to complete. At VedaNu Wellness, we consider it one of the most gratifying surgeries we offer due to its dramatic improvements in both comfort and confidence. By removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, the procedure not only reduces breast size—it also elevates the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall. This natural lifting effect often improves posture and alleviates chronic discomfort in the neck, back, and shoulders.
To ensure optimal and lasting results, we recommend that patients reach a stable, long-term body weight prior to surgery. Maintaining this ideal weight after surgery helps reduce the likelihood of future revisions and supports a more predictable, long-lasting outcome.
Juvenile Breast Reduction
In some cases, breast reduction may be necessary for teens who experience disproportionately large breasts at a young age—a condition known as juvenile breast hypertrophy. This can cause both physical and emotional distress, especially as it impacts posture, comfort, self-esteem, and the ability to participate in daily activities like sports or shopping.
Juvenile breast reduction is a safe and effective procedure that can dramatically improve quality of life for teens who have reached or are near their ideal weight. It’s important that young candidates understand and accept the possibility of surgical scarring in exchange for the long-term benefits of improved size, shape, and symmetry. While the procedure can offer lasting results, future changes such as pregnancy or weight fluctuation may require additional revision in adulthood.
Healing after breast reduction surgery is a gradual process, and following detailed post-operative instructions is key to ensuring a smooth, successful recovery. Most patients experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the days following surgery, but these symptoms typically improve over time with proper care.
At VedaNu Wellness, we provide every patient with tailored post-op instructions to help manage discomfort and monitor healing progress. You’ll be asked to sleep in an upright position for the first 1–2 weeks and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least 4–6 weeks. Most patients are cleared to return to work in about two weeks, depending on the nature of their job and how they feel.
You’ll need to wear a surgical bra or compression garment continuously during the early healing phase. This provides support, helps minimize swelling, and aids in shaping the newly contoured breasts. Drains may be placed during surgery to remove excess fluid, and these are typically removed within a few days.
Showering is usually permitted after drain removal, and our team will guide you on how to care for the incisions to minimize scarring. Please avoid submerging the incision sites in water (like in bathtubs or hot tubs) for at least six weeks, and avoid sun exposure to help scars heal smoothly.
Scars will continue to improve over time, and any itching, firm spots, or minor redness will be monitored during your follow-ups. Patients are encouraged to stay in close contact with our office, especially if they notice anything unusual, such as excess fluid, redness, or delayed healing.
We’ll see you regularly after surgery—typically at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, and again at 2, 3, and 6 months—to ensure you're healing properly. Our team is always available to answer your questions and ensure your recovery is progressing as expected.
